FACTS:
In 1999, approximately 900 kilo-tonnes of landfill methane was emitted into the atmosphere, representing the equivalent carbon dioxide emissions from 4.6 million cars.

Landfill gas produced from Canadian landfills in one year equals the energy contained in 9 million barrels of oil, enough to heat 500,000 homes.

Doubling Canada's current landfill gas capture rate would represent a 2-4% achievement toward the Kyoto goal.
